  “All right,” I say. “I have lunch waiting in the kitchen. When we get where we’re going, I’ll transport it, and we’ll eat there.”

  We keep riding, and riding, past the hills, past craggy cliffs and mountains, until the land seems to go no farther. All we can see ahead is the sky.

  I stop my mount at the top of one of the last hills we can see. In the distance, I can hear rushing water falling from a great height.

  I get off my horse, snapping my fingers so that a basket of food appears. Then I walk over to Sandra, who has stopped Joy and is trying to get down.

  I reach up and grab her around the waist, setting her down and then pulling her in for a quick kiss before I let her go.

  “That was amazing,” she says, keeping an arm around my waist as we walk forward over the crest of the hill to look down. “What’s over there, though?”

  To our left, a large stream is flowing by, glistening with hints of rainbow. It flows past us and over the falls, creating mist that throws little glints of rainbow lights all over the grass and the lower clouds.

  I sit down on the grass where the view is best, where we can see the falls, the clouds, and look back to see the dream fae kingdoms behind us.

  “Oh my God, I never should have agreed to this,” she says, sitting back and looking at the falls in a daze as I unpack our lunch. “Everything is so beautiful.” She smiles at me. “And you always seem to know just where to go. What to do.”

  “I could just stay here forever, I think,” she says, eyes twinkly in the sunlight, reflecting a few of the clouds overhead.

  She eats it, and Joy grazes and wanders while Licorice waits nearby for my next command.

  Everything is relaxed, and there’s no one around for a long while.

  Regardless of what happens after this, I will always remember this as a time when I was very content.

  We eat quietly, enjoying the rumble of the falls and the slow movement of clouds overhead.

  “He cheated on my mother,” she says. “I don’t know when it started. He was mean too, but it was the cheating that broke her. She still loved him, no matter what he did.
