  One hand held her leg, keeping her spread in front of him, and the other planted on her stomach, keeping her pinned so she couldn’t writhe away.

  Not that she would ever want to intentionally. It was just that the pleasure from his tongue and lips on her most sensitive parts was so much she couldn’t contain herself, and her body seemed to thrash all on its own.

  So she was grateful for his steadying hand. For the strength he displayed as his mouth slowly worked her to a state of delirious ecstasy too strong for her to stand.

  Just as she was hovering, floating in a state of complete anticipation of what was to come, his mouth came down hard, sucking directly over her clit where before he’d just been teasing.

  She came with the feel of a sudden downpour, refreshing and overwhelming and strong, her muscles contracting as pleasure washed over her like summer rain.

  “Oh God, Garrett, it’s unlike anything,” she gasped out, sitting forward and grasping his shoulders, digging her nails in as he came over her and allowed her to be close.

  He was so big, so muscular, and when he held her like this, keeping his head to her shoulder as she cried out her pleasure, she had never felt more cared for or safe.

  It was an odd thing when she could have felt vulnerable or used with anyone else. No one had ever done that particular act on her, yet with Garrett, it had felt so right. She’d known instinctively she could trust him with it.

  Her thighs still ached with sticky heat, her body still hot from wherever he touched. She reached up and brushed his hair back, trying to catch her breath even as her body begged for so much more.

  She pulled him into a kiss and was shocked when she could taste herself on his lips. It was delightfully wicked, and even though she usually would have found it startling, with Garrett, it was simply… hot.

  “More,” she said, thrusting her hips up against him. “And take off your pants. I need to see all of you.” She ran her hands down his fly, once again surprised by her own boldness.

  Perhaps it was just her awareness that life was fleeting that was making her determined to live.

  Or maybe it simply was Garrett, how kind and attractive he was.

  But she wasn’t going to stop until she’d gotten every drop of him, wrung every last bit of pleasure out of his bones.

  “Take me,” she gasped into his ear. When he let out one of those pleased little growls she was getting used to, she knew she would get her wish.

  Chapter 10

  His mate was insatiable. Garrett had known it would be powerful, any chance he got to bond or connect with his mate.

  But he’d still been taken aback by the strength of the feelings inside him, the control it took to take things slow with her and not just throw her on the ground and have his way as the animal inside him demanded.

  But he wasn’t going to take her like that, not now, when she still knew so little about him. The truth about him, anyway.

  But he could tell from her hungry expression, from the wetness he could still taste deliciously on his tongue, the way she thrust up against him, that they were going to come together tonight.

  It was just what his mate wanted, and there was no part of him that was able to say no.

  He pulled a condom packet from his pocket and tore it open with his teeth as he stepped off the bed to take his pants off.

  She made an adorable little purring noise as he undid the button, and he enjoyed her look of admiration and then shock as he dropped his pants, then his boxers to the ground.

  As someone raised in the wild, he was comfortable naked. Then again, he’d never had someone looking at him like this.

  He came onto the bed with her, wanting to feel the contrast of her body next to his, so much pale softness compared to his tanned, muscled heat.

  She spread her legs immediately, and he could see it now. The look in her eyes that was only for him, the confirmation that she thought he was special, that she wasn’t like this for anyone else.

  That she was also caught up in this whirlwind neither of them could fully understand.

  The air was full of her scent, her heat, feminine and sweet and incredible. He parted her legs even more and slid a finger slowly between her folds.

  He grimaced at the tightness there, knowing he might hurt her if he came inside. He slid another finger in and could barely get it to fit. It was hot, feeling her walls pressing against him, but at the same time, the last thing he wanted was to cause pain. “Dawn…”

  “Keep going,” she said, thrusting against his finger. “I… can adjust.”

  He smiled, knowing she was right, and let himself get caught up in the moment instead of worrying. Enjoying the feel of her body around his fingers, the way her breasts trembled and fell back against her chest. Her small hands clutching the covers. Even the creak of the cheap hotel bed.

  He wanted to take her somewhere better. Heaven knew she deserved the best things in the world. He’d build her a little spot of heaven and pray he would be able to live there with her as well.

  But for now, he just treasured the soft flush of her cheeks, the way her still-red lips were parted in anticipation as his fingers worked her closer to release.

  He felt her clench against him as she went over the edge in release, and the feel of her coming as her cries echoed in the moonlight was almost enough to send him over the edge no matter how much control he was trying to maintain.

  As her muscles pushed against him, again and again, so wet and hot he could barely stand it, he felt her slowly begin to relax. Maybe he was imagining it, but it felt like there was a little more room.

  Still, the last thing he could do was hurt her. He was born to only please her, to make her happy for the rest of her life.

  She pushed up on her elbows, looking exhausted but not ready to stop, fire in her beautiful gray eyes, red hair sticking to the sides of her face, making her look even more fiery. She pushed at it with one hand as she glared at him. “I hope you don’t think you’re getting away with just that.”

  He smiled ruefully. “Dawn, I don’t know if I can. There’s no rush.”

  She blinked at him, pushing more of her hair off her forehead. Then she pushed up onto her knees and moved toward him so they were thigh to thigh.

  She ran a hand through his hair, looking at him tenderly. “Garrett, we never know how much time we have here. So yeah, in a way, there’s no rush. At the same time, all we have is this moment. If we put things off, thinking we can always have them later… sometimes that doesn’t turn out to be true.”

  He nodded, knowing the truth of what she said and the real pain behind it. She took his hand and pressed it over her heart, letting him feel how it was beating.

  “I don’t know about you, but I want this. This feels… better than anything ever has in my life. Now that we’re here, don’t you think we should go all the way?”

  The bear in him roared in triumph, and he no longer had any strength to resist. He would just have to try to go slow for her. Try to make sure things were fine.

  Because dammit, he wanted her more than he had ever wanted anything in this world, wanted her silky heat against his hardness, wanted to know she was his.

  He picked up the condom, sliding it roughly over his length, wishing he could be bare with her, skin to skin.

  Later.

  “Okay, sweetheart,” he said, taking her shoulders and gently laying her down beneath him. He spread her legs gently, getting between her thighs, letting his member touch her wet, hot entrance. He could feel her so clearly, even through the condom. “God, Dawn, you’re amazing. You’re everything I want, and—”

  “Shut up and come inside before I can’t take it anymore,” she snapped. But her tone wasn’t angry, just full of a desperation he could feel inside himself.

  Slowly, carefully, he pushed inside her, bringing them together until they were hip to hip. Her arms wound up around his shoulders, and he propped himself up with a hand on each side of her head.

 
They were together. Somehow, he’d managed to get inside her, and now he was overwhelmed by the smooth, tight heat.

  Oh hell, was it always like this? Or only when with a mate? He had no idea, but he was glad he was experiencing it for the first time, here with her, the woman he would love for all time.

  If only he could tell her the same.

  She pulled his head down, one hand curling affectionately in his hair. “I want you to move.”

  He loved when she demanded what she wanted, loved pleasing her, knowing she was bold enough to ask. So he began to move inside her, carefully at first and then with smoother, quicker control.

  Her breath hitched, her sex clenched, and her nails dug into him as he continued to stroke, sometimes fast, sometimes languid, grateful for the condom in helping him keep control of himself.

  She was writhing, moaning, sweating, and all of it the hottest thing he’d ever seen. She arched back, biting her bottom lip, cursing, scratching his back as the tension built inside her. If she felt half as amazing as he did, he had no idea how she was holding on.

  Aside from the sheer physical high of it, there was the emotional component as well, the way their bodies came closer with each thrust, as if they were one person. The way he was fully inside her as no one else could be. That she was looking at him only, that he was the one bringing her pleasure, clutched tightly in his arms.

  The thought nearly took him over the edge, and he paused, sheathed deep inside her, hearing both of them pant.

  Then, because he didn’t think he could hold on any longer, he kept moving, thrusting deeper and harder this time. She began to let out little screams of anticipation, and he felt high with the thought that she would soon come, clenching around his sex.

  He thrust in extra deep, pinning them together, and she came, thrashing wildly in his arms and screaming out his name.

  He joined her, feeling liquid heat rush over him like lava, warming from the inside out as hard spurts emanated from his tip, wrenching and exhilarating at the same time.

  He could feel her release around him, gripping and releasing, and his eyes locked on hers, lost in a haze of pleasure, her lips still parted as she called his name.

  He swore he could have blacked out from the sheer pleasure of the moment, and he closed his eyes briefly as he felt the last pulses of her sex.

  It was over.

  He was spent, still inside her but slowly recovering, feeling the aftershocks of her body, seeing her hands fall limply to the sheets on either side of her utterly satisfied face.

  “Oh, Garrett. That was everything,” she said, reaching up weakly to put her arms around him. He lowered himself for a quick hug from her, then pulled back and out of her to clean up.

  “I’ll be right back.”

  She sat up a little shakily and watched in confusion as he ran through the door. He did a quick cleanup in the bathroom and then came back in with her, swiping up his boxers as he went so she wouldn’t feel awkward with him in her bed.

  Then he jumped into the sheets with her, grabbing her and pulling her in tight, so he could curl around her and protect her with his bulk.

  She tensed and then let out a little sigh, relaxing into him. “Did we really just do that?”

  “We did.”

  She laughed and put her hands over his that were wrapped around her waist. “We’re crazy. You know that?”

  “No,” he said, nuzzling into her, knowing he wouldn’t be able to leave, that he would be spending the entire night in her arms. “We’re just perfect.”

  As he heard her laugh and snuggle into him, he knew he was right.

  Chapter 11

  The next morning, Dawn found riding in Garrett’s truck to be much more agreeable than in her tiny Toyota as they traversed the bumpy road to her home. It was earlier than she was used to getting up, the morning sun only barely peeking over the horizon, sending beams of horizontal yellow light through the trees, but she’d slept surprisingly well, all things considered.

  God, last night had been amazing. Just the slightest thought of it made her break out into a full flush, causing her to feel warm and red all over. She glanced over at Garrett, hoping to remind herself that everything had not been, in fact, just a dream.

  He was looking as calm and cheery as ever, driving with one hand on the wheel and looking out his window into the still-awakening forest, a relaxed smile on his lips. For a moment, she just studied his features, her body responding instantly to the vivid memory of his hands, his mouth all over her.

  Suddenly, he turned to look at her, eyes almost orange in this light as he seemed to beam with satisfaction.

  “So do you have any specific plans for today?” His brown hair was still ruffled from last night, making Dawn want to run her hands through it again.

  “Nothing much. Probably run some errands in town. Try to stay out of you guys’ way.”

  This morning she’d awoken to an oversized breakfast piled high in takeout boxes that Garrett had brought from the cafe. They’d talked a little about last night, about how amazing it had been, but nothing further.

  For all Dawn knew, Garrett had had his fun and now things were going to go back to the way they were before. But she didn’t get any inkling from him that he was a player, the kind of guy to take sex as casually as most men with good looks like his probably got away with.

  In reality, she had to remind herself that this was a casual thing and that she shouldn’t go chasing more just because Garrett acted and looked so perfect. She was still in a new place, with a host of things to take care of before her life could really start. And by the time her house was done, Garrett and his crew would be moving on to the next thing, the next project, the next place, leaving her here in Silver Lake, alone.

  The way things were meant to be.

  She had to hope there would be other men further down the line. And if not, Dawn was okay with that. She’d been just fine on her own before.

  Though, somehow the thought rankled that the same applied to Garrett. That there would be other women more than willing to throw themselves at his feet.

  “What’s on your mind? Beautiful morning, right? Great for thinking, clearing your head.” Garrett’s deep voice, so relaxed, pierced through the noise of dirt road beneath them.

  I was thinking about you sleeping with other women. She took a deep breath and let it out. Garrett could do as he pleased. And so could she.

  It didn’t matter that her heart could feel something deeper with him than any other person she’d ever met in her life. She just needed to avoid getting jealous or obsessed.

  “Nothing much. Just enjoying the fresh air.” He nodded in approval as she relaxed into the thick leather chair of the truck’s passenger seat.

  Garrett was her contractor, nothing more, nothing less. Granted, her contractor happened to be mind-blowing in bed. And yes, he was the most protective, hard-working, sexiest, kindest man she’d ever laid eyes on. But that had to be put aside for the time being.

  Finally, the truck rolled into the clearing where the outline of her home was quickly taking full shape into a fully built house.

  They both got out of the truck, and she took a deep breath of cool pine air and stretched, the scent reminiscent of campouts and hikes from years past. Hunter and Grayson weren’t there yet, but they probably would be soon.

  “Can I get anything for you. More coffee perhaps?” Garrett leaned on the hood of the truck, watching her thoughtfully.

  “No, I’m just going to get a few things from my van real quick.” She walked toward the corner of the lot where she’d parked her rented yellow moving van out of the way so the guys could work.

  She hadn’t felt comfortable leaving it in the hotel parking lot, so she’d tried to pack everything she might need while staying in the hotel in her suitcases. But there were a few random things, like her spare drawing tablet and a few extra cords, that would be nice to have available.

  Dawn came around the side of the van, pulling
out the key for the padlock she’d used to seal the door. But when she came behind the van, she looked up and alarm shot through her like a bolt of lightning.

  The heavy rolling door was wide open. Some of the boxes in her van were open, and everything was covered in a light sheen of morning dew.

  “Shit,” Dawn exclaimed in sheer shock. Maybe she hadn’t locked the deadbolt all the way? She looked around and found not one, but two halves that had once been a copper-colored lock sheared jaggedly down the center as though they’d been cut with some razor-sharp tool.

  She barely registered the sound of hurried, heavy footsteps, until suddenly Garrett was standing next to her.

  “What’s wrong? Are you all right?” Garrett asked, worried, looking down at her before turning and registering what was going on as she just stared, holding the two pieces of lock in her hand. “What happened?”

  “I… I don’t know.” She set aside the shattered lock and put a hand on the edge of the bed, wanting to get up and see what had been stolen.

  Sure, her belongings were meager, but they were still her things. And the thought that something or someone had helped themselves to her stuff was deeply disturbing.

  She struggled for a second, then felt Garrett’s hands on her sides, lifting her off the ground like nothing and onto the wood bed of the moving van. A second later, the van rocked up and down as Garrett hopped on behind her.

  “Is anything missing?” he asked, his close presence comforting in spite of the stress of the situation.

  For a moment, she rummaged around, checking the opened boxes. Some had been opened carefully, the tape cut or peeled back. Others had just been ripped open, the folds of the box torn and frayed.

  At least, on initial inspection, nothing important was gone.

  “Not that I can tell.”

  Luckily, she’d buried the boxes with valuables and such at the back, beneath her furniture. Whoever or whatever had come inside had been fairly disinterested in actually stealing and seemed to have simply snooped around casually before leaving.
